Evidence-based practice (EBP) is now treated as the basic standard for safe, high-quality nursing care. ANA defines EBP in nursing as providing holistic, quality care based on the most up-to-date research and knowledge rather than tradition, habit, or personal opinion.ANA Contemporary authors describe EBP in similar terms: a problem-solving approach that integrates best research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to guide care decisions.NCBI+2Sigma Journals+2 This shift became even more visible after U.S. policies such as the Affordable Care Act tied reimbursement and reform efforts to demonstrable, evidence-based outcomes.

For this discussion I reviewed the American Nurses Association (ANA) website (https://www.nursingworld.org/ana). The homepage presents ANA’s mission “Lead the profession to shape the future of nursing and health care” and links prominently to the Code of Ethics, nursing research, clinical practice materials, Magnet and Pathway credentialing programs, ANA journals, and continuing education.ANA While the mission statement itself does not use the phrase “evidence-based practice,” EBP is embedded throughout the site’s structure and resources.

EBP appears most explicitly in ANA’s content hub article “What is Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing?” This page offers a clear definition of EBP, practical guidance on how to use it, a five-step process (ask, acquire, appraise, apply, assess), and a discussion of levels of evidence.ANA It also highlights concrete examples such as alarm-fatigue protocols and non-invasive pediatric blood pressure measurement, and it links directly to “Clinical Practice Material” where nurses can find guidelines and tools grounded in current research.ANA
